Member Meetings

Are held the last Monday of the month at the Batavia Public Library. Please do not call the library with questions, they do not have any information on our meetings. Check our calendar on the home page.

Doors open at 6:30pm, meeting starts at 7pm. (see the Contact page for directions). Beginning in January of 2017 we are going to begin charging a $5 per person guest fee in order to attend the meetings. Members will be allowed entry into the meeting first. After that any guests who wish to attend will be allowed in after paying the $5 fee.

Our meeting format is to open with Association business (reading of the minutes, treasurers report, announcements, the welcoming of any guests, etc.) followed by an educational segment by a speaker of interest and then open discussion about beekeeping issues and timely apiary chores. The meetings normally adjourn around 8:30 - 8:45pm.

November 2017

We will have a discussion panel on how to make handmade holiday gifts from the hive. Don't miss this instructional discussion on how to market you hive products for the upcoming holidays. Much to see. With some holiday treats included. Last meeting for 2017!!

September, 2017

Discussion panel on winterizing your hives.
Daniel Patterson will give a talk on his visit to bee hives in Germany.
$5.00 guest fee for non-members.

June, 2017

Meeting speaker is Garry Grube .  Gary is the Chicago Director of the Illinois Queen Initiative. He will be speaking about Mite Biting Bees and The Chicago Bee Project.

The Illinois Queen Initiative’s Mission Statement:  To produce queens and bees that are more disease and mite resistant and have greater survival and productivity characteristics under Illinois conditions. By producing them locally they are better adapted to each area in the state.  We seek to do this through educational programs, cooperative exchange of breeding stock, member exchange of ideas and methods of testing stock, cooperative purchase of supplies, and promotion of Illinois-produced queens and bees to our state’s beekeepers.

At the monthly meeting Monday April 24th, Terry Breen will be talking about catching our swarms and Mike Prescott will be talking about using the FVBA google groups.

February, 2017

Larry Roth and Rich Ramsey will be discussing overwintered hive splits and re-queening. With over 70 years of combined beekeeping experience, they will be sharing some very exciting and useful information.

November, 2016

Ron Fischer, renowned Richard Avedon's photo subject from 1981, will be speaking about his beekeeping experience but will really highlight cooking with honey for the holidays.  Ron is well known throughout the Chicago area as well as the Quad Cities for his work with bees, honey, and apples.  You will NOT be disappointed!

September, 2016

Eleanor Schumacher, Illinois State Bee Inspector, will join us to share what has been going on in both the beehives and in the state recently. Eleanor is an extremely well-respected authority and a wonderful speaker so come and enjoy what she has to say!

Join us at our August meeting for a re-cap on our honey booth at the Illinois State Fair as well as a lesson on honey extraction by the Lorences.
